MOKAS act of heroism!

http://www.tvnet.lv/online_tv/2820

Yesterday (March 6, 2010) around 4pm I went through a terrible shock. Yesterday I was off work.

So I was busy doing laundry and ironing when my daughter Eva’s dog Moka started barking like mad.

Ridgebacks do not bark without a serious reason.  In the beginning I could not understand why she was barking as there was no one at the door, and nothing seemed to be out of the ordinary.

I thought perhaps Moka was looking through the window and saw a dog running down the street.

But then I saw that Moka was not even close to the window. Something was really wrong.

Moka came up to me and started running to the door and scratching it like she does when she needs to go outside.

I couldn’t understand what was going on. Then I heard the dryer making way too much noise – I have put a blanket to dry a bit earlier.

Moka was scratching the bathroom door, so I let her in. She ran to the dryer. I could smell an odd scent of hair from the dryer.

I turned off the dryer and turned around to go to the other room, but Moka stood in front of me and would not let me leave the bathroom.

And then my nose picked up on a burning smell coming from the dryer.

I quickly unplugged the dryer, and tried to pull out the blanket from the inside.

With the blanket, out of the dryer came my 18 year old cat Simba! I was in absolute shock, hands and legs shaking, and didn’t know what to do next.

The first thought was to rush to the vet to see if Simba was okay.  I put the cat on the bed, and she didn’t want me to touch her.

But she looked fine and there was no evidence of any trauma.

I still do not know how she ended up in a dryer – she usually loves to lay in bed or on the top of the fridge.

She’s one independent cat and usually takes great caution. I cannot believe I did not see the cat when I was putting the blanket into the dryer, and I cannot believe that the cat was quiet as I turned on the dryer, and as it was tumbling for 3-5 minutes until Moka started barking.

Only in the evening as my emotions calmed down did I realize that my precious Moka has saved Simba.

I can’t even imagine what would have happened if I took Moka for a walk instead of letting her show me the dryer.

Thank you Moka, my hero, for saving Simba from such a horrid accident.

Ventspils takes Riga CACIB by the storm!

Congratulations to our colleagues and friends on their amazing achievements and new titles gained at this international show. We brought back home new titles of Latvian Junior Champions, Latvian Show Champions, BOB, CACIB, as well as CRUFTS qualifying certificates. We are happy that most of the dogs that gained these awards were bred by the breeders of our Club. This is the greatest victory for our breeders.

We were cheering for all our fellow exhibitors and keeping our fingers crossed. However, this time there was a breed which had us worried the most - not often is there a chance to show under a person who developed the FCI standard for the breed - therefore, a specialist that knows the most, the best and whose evaluation is worth its price in gold.

On October 29th there was a meeting at the LKF office with Greg Eva (South Africa) – a breed specialist and judge who developed the Rhodesian Ridgeback standard, a fantastic person and a wise and knowledgeable judge. This meeting was extremely valuable for the Ridgeback breeders. Ventspils Kennel Club, which is considered as the capital of Latvia's Ridgebacks, was represented by 6 members.

Mr Eva talked about the development of the breed and its standard. The most important thing was the extremely detailed explanation of the standard. Breeders as well as judges and cynologists gained a lot from this meeting. And, judging by what we heard at the seminar, we thought we may be on the right track, but still we expected the results of Mr Eva’s judging with a trembling heart.

And now we can safely say - WELL DONE, WELL DONE, WELL DONE!!!!!

On Saturday the breed was judged by Mr Greg Eva himself, and OUR MOKA was selected as the best and most beautiful Ridgeback!!!!!!

Congratulations to Ieva, Biruta, Anna with the super result - BOB, CACIB, BIG-5, qualification to Crufts!

On Sunday Moka took a day off, and our Sveta went into the ring with OUR AMA, under a judge from Italy. And - victory once more! AMA - BOB & CACIB. The greatest anxiety was before the group finals, as the group was judged by non other than GREG EVA. And AMA takes BIG-3!!!!!

The youngest generation of Ridgebacks was also evaluated as "excellent", and this evaluation is truly the most valuable one. We just have to keep up the good work and improve it even more. This also places a responsibility upon us to keep the breed at such a high level. Good luck to us all!

October 31st, 2009, International Dog Show „Zooekspo „2009” with the awarding of FCI CACIB and CRUFTS qualifications. We anticipated this day impatiently and with great concern. With concern because Moka had decided to live out the experience of a so-called false pregnancy. With impatience, because the judge was from the Ridgeback's country of origin - president of the FCI South Africa Kennel Club, Mr Greg Eva. The Rhodesian Ridgeback standard was developed by him. To me, the evaluation of this judge was crucial, as it was very important to find out what he thought of Moka, and even more important to find out his opinion of her offspring so that in the future, when planning a litter, we know which direction to look in for our next stud in order to achieve the best results in the breeding of Rhodesian Ridgebacks.

Up until the day of the show Moka was engaged in heavy „workout” to lose some weight. Every day she did approximately 20 minutes of roadwork by the bicycle and then off to the forest she went together with her son Grant for a 1-2 hours' walk. I on the other hand kept her busy with various things (hardly imaginable!) just to keep her thoughts away from her "imaginary pregnancy". Taught her to "sing", revised her „Maths” lessons and played various treat-finding games with her.

The day of the show was fast approaching. To me Moka still looked a little too round, but - whatever will be, will be...

I will afford myself a small digression here.

I am very thankful to my daughter and Moka's real owner Ieva who left Moka in my care when she moved to Riga. I know just too well that this wasn't an easy decision, as Moka is her beloved pet, confidante and friend. And I know that only a loving heart can offer a sacrifice for the sake of their dear friend.

One day Ieva said to me: "Mommy, I know that she will be better off with you, because living in the city I won't be able to provide her with everything she deserves.” My children are now grown and left the nest. My days would have been lonely, but now I have a "fourth" child - Moka, Ieva's sweetie and mine.

Thank you, darling, for entrusting me with your greatest treasure, your dream dog!

So the day of the show came.....

As I could observe from the ring side, the judge was no nonsense ... He was touching and feeling everything - the dog's back, the neck, the toes, the curves; he measured and evaluated proportions of the head and the body, etc... It was an enormous adrenaline kick! Finally the winner was announced:

After more than three years of hoping Moka finally gave green light to a trip to the WORLD DOG SHOW 2009 which was held in Slovakia this year.

288 Rhodesian Ridgebacks were entered from all over the world.

We didn't cherish any high hopes concerning Moka, as she had gained excess weight (due to false pregnancy) and looked like a Ridgeback peasant woman against the slim and toned Ridgeback chicks in her class of 35. Judge BO SKALIN from Sweden didn't find Moka's changes attractive either and she was awarded a "very good".

Moka's son from her first litter, Otello GRANTS Moka, was shown too. Grant was exhibited in Intermediate Class of 27 under judge HANS MULLER (CH), president of the FCI. Grant was evaluated as "excellent".

Grant's critique: Correct size and proportions, good topline, correct ridge, strong chest, good bone and correct, parallel stance. Masculine head. The skull (forehead) somewhat too large, a little too much wrinkle over forehead, correct bite, good movement.
